CAMPING SKILLS


The Camping Skills training sessions are presented in three progressive levels and need to be taken in order. Level I is a prerequisite for Level II, and Level II is a prerequisite for Level III. Minimum enrollment for Level I and Level III is five. Minimum enrollment for Level II is 15. Maximum enrollment for each training session is 30. In order for the girls to progressively practice these new skills, it is recommended that each level be taken at least one month apart.


Level I: Indoor Camping

This three-hour course will prepare leaders to get their girls ready for their first overnight adventure. Get ready for day hikes, and get great ideas for program activities in this session.


Leaders will learn beginning knots, trail signs and poisonous plants. A leader or other registered adult must complete Level I before the troop can stay overnight at a Program Center or other venue. No prerequisite.

Minimum enrollment: five.  Maximum 30.

Level II: Outdoor Cooking

This four-hour course is a hands on outdoor cooking experience. Learn about menu planning, various types of cooking, stoves and lanterns, as well as camp sanitation. A leader or other registered adult must complete Level II before the troop can start a wood campfire or charcoal fire, use buddy burners, box ovens, propane stoves, or lanterns.

Prerequisite: Level I: Indoor Camping.

Minimum enrollment: 15. Maximum 30.

Materials  Fee: $7. BRING your rope from Level 1, mess kit with a cup, eating utensils, dunk bag, and head scarf (all available at the Council Store).

Level III: Outdoor Camping

This three-hour course will prepare leaders to set up the campsite and tents. Leaders will learn more knots, an introduction to lashing and campfire program, and about the animals that they may encounter. Nighttime activities and an outdoor flag ceremony will be included. A leader or other registered adult must complete Level III before the troop can go tent camping.

Prerequisite: Level II: Outdoor Cooking.

Minimum enrollment: five.  Maximum 30.
BRING your rope from Levels I & II, the tent you will be using, and a pocket knife.
