:: Council Trainers
What
type of training do Council Trainers provide?
Council Trainers provide the Topics and Traditions training sessions for leaders. It is an interactive session that covers such topics as Girl Scout ceremonies, games, songs, safety
and outdoor education. They also provide Daisy, Brownie, Junior, and Cadette training as well as camping skills and outdoor cooking.
Council Trainers generally have a preference for the level training they provide and usually choose the level their troop has just completed. For example, a Junior leader will provide Daisy
and/or Brownie level training.
Council Trainers provide other training sessions, based on their interest and experience,
such as Teaching Games and Songs, Progression in Service Projects, Bottle Biology, Girl Scout Ceremonies, Knots and Lashing
and many others.
Who are the Council Trainers?
Mt. Wilson Vista Council's trainer corps is
made up of adult volunteers who receive specialized training to train leaders. Council Trainers must enjoy public speaking, have a commitment to the
values and goals of Girl Scouting, and the ability to motivate and provide support to new leaders. Council Trainers have usually
been leaders for at least two years.
How are Council Trainers prepared to train Girl Scout Leaders?
Mt.
Wilson Vista Council provides new Council Trainers with training outlines, training books for trainees and staff support.
After completing the Council Trainer training, new Council Trainers attend three training sessions as apprentice trainers.
Council Trainers have access to ongoing support, update training and enrichment from Mt. Wilson Vista Council staff.
Council
Trainers also assist in curriculum design and content through mini-conferences and by reviewing the training books prepared
by Mt. Wilson Vista Council. An annual Council Trainer conference provides ongoing instruction and updates. Council Trainers
also gather at the end of the year for a holiday party.
When do training sessions take place?
Leader training sessions are conducted in the evenings during the week. Camping skills are sometimes taught during the day on Saturday. Most training
sessions take place at the Council office in Arcadia but can be held at Program Centers throughout the community. Training
dates and times are determined by the Adult Development Director in consultation with Council Trainers.
How
often do Council Trainers provide training?
Council Trainers provide six training sessions per year, however,
trainers who wish to do more are encouraged to do so.
