Leaders of Today to Mentor Leaders of
Tomorrow in 2008

Alhambra Mayor Gary Yamauchi and Troop 78
In
a very successful first year, the 2007 Girl Scout Leader for a Day Program brought prominent members of local communities
together with 27 Girl Scout troops across the San Gabriel Valley. As spring approaches, Mt. Wilson Vista Council will
once again provide an opportunity for community leaders to meet with Girl Scouts and their leaders who are making the world
a better place!
Timed to coincide with Leader Appreciation Day on April 22, guest leaders will be visiting
troop meetings throughout the month of April, 2008 to highlight leadership development and recognize the troop leaders who
model leadership to girls every day of the year.
The Leader for a Day program also provides an opportunity for
Girl Scouts to complete requirements toward several Daisy Petals, Try-Its, badges and Interest Project Awards.

In its first year in 2007, Fire Chiefs, School Board
Superintendents, Police Officers, Mayors and City Council Members were among those who stepped into the role of “Leader
for a Day," visiting a Girl Scout meeting to discuss their profession, views on leadership and teamwork, and often to
lead a troop activity.
In Alhambra, Mayor Gary Yamauchi became the Leader for a Day for Troop
78, answering questions about his profession and city government. He presented the troop and leader Elvira Sanchez with
a Key to the City of Alhambra to honor the Girl Scouts for their service to the community.
Also recognized was Duarte Troop 454 led by Claudia Gonzalez. Mayor Lois Gaston, the Leader for a Day, invited the girls
who had just earned their Silver Award to a City Council meeting to honor their achievement. She also invited the troop to
be part of the Route 66 celebration held in September by hosting Miss California. Many of the
guest leaders had grown up as Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts themselves and shared the positive role scouting has played in their
lives.
The 2008 Leader for a Day program is open to all troops throughout the San Gabriel
Valley. Troop leaders are invited to sign up now through March 15, 2008 by contacting Melissa
Duncan at (626) 445-7771, ext. 315, or e-mail mduncan@gsmwvc.org. Please include your phone number along with the days and times of your troop meetings in April.
