:: 2007 Gold Award Girl Scouts Feature Archives (continued)

Each week, Girl Scouts-Mt. Wilson Vista Council highlights one of the 85 Gold Award recipients for the year 2007.

The following are the girls who have been featured in past weeks on our homepage.

Girl Scouting’s highest honor, the Gold Award, recognizes Senior Girl Scouts for outstanding accomplishments in leadership, community service, career planning, and personal development.

The award culminates with a Gold Award project that has a positive and lasting impact on the community. Each project represents a minimum of 65 hours of planning and implementation. This year’s group of Gold Award recipients contributed over 5,500 hours of service to the community.

Melody
Melody organized a golfing excursion for 17 children with disabilities from Ability First for her Gold Award project. Having volunteered at Ability First (formerly The Crippled Children’s Society of Southern California) for over two years and inspired by the fun she had playing golf, she decided she wanted to offer the kids at Ability First a unique experience they would not otherwise be provided.

Melody and several volunteers initially gave basic golf instruction to the children. Then, on a sunny Friday afternoon, the group enjoyed a golf outing at the Arroyo Seco Golf Course in South Pasadena.

Melody is a junior at Flintridge Preparatory School in La Cañada. She currently serves as President of Flintridge Prep’s Key Club, which is a service club devoted to the betterment of the surrounding community. Melody’s involvement in Key Club includes organizing an extensive turkey drive in November that feeds needy families and senior citizens in the Los Angeles area, serving meals at Midnight Missions in Skid Row, and fundraising for the March of Dimes and the National Wildlife Conservation Society.

Melody also plays Varsity Basketball at Flintridge Prep and regularly volunteers for the American Red Cross. Her hobbies include playing recreational golf and the piano.

Melody would like to thank her amazing Girl Scout advisors, Janet and Mary, as well as her supportive parents, Chester and Linda. She would also like to offer a special thanks to the very helpful staff from Ability First for their support and cooperation.

Katie
Katie’s Gold Award project, “Sports, Science and Me,” was developed and implemented in conjunction with several other Senior Girl Scouts from her troop.

The intent of the project was to inform and educate Junior Girl Scouts from Mt. Wilson Vista Council about how to have a healthy lifestyle and to help them earn specific badges related to sports, science and food.

The event, which was months in the planning, involved researching the topics, acquiring specific information and handouts, creating tabletop displays, preparing take-home bags, promoting and setting up the event, and presenting the information to all the girls in attendance.

The girls enjoyed the event and found it very helpful and informative. The day ended with a team-building game of basketball!

Katie is a 16-year-old Senior Girl Scout from Troop 521. She attends South Pasadena High School where she is a member of the Swim Team and Girls Water Polo Team. She has been formally recognized for her extensive volunteerism by the South Pasadena / San Marino YMCA.

Katie is also a three-time South Pasadena High School Heart of Gold Award Recipient, and her love of animals has also led her to volunteer extensively at the Pasadena Humane Society and SPCA.

She was recently recognized by KABC-TV Channel 7 as part of their “Cool Kids” program for her work with the Angels for Sight Eye Clinic that provides free eye care to underserved and uninsured children and seniors in the city of Compton.

In the future, Katie hopes to study medicine with an emphasis on research.

Katie is proud of her long-term commitment to Girl Scouts, and she is grateful for the friendships, skills, values and wonderful memories that she and her family have shared during the many scouting-related events and trips of the past 11 years. Katie wishes to thank her Girl Scout Leader, fellow Senior Girl Scouts and her family for their support.

Claire

For her Gold Award project, Claire collected craft supplies for the Hathaway-Sycamores Foundation in Altadena and organized a Chinese New Year celebration as part of a cultural awareness program.

The Hathaway-Sycamores Foundation provides a haven for troubled children as well as a program that helps families and children recognize and build on their strengths so that they can become independent of long-term professional care.

 C_Claire.gif
Claire collected an entire carload of craft supplies for the Sycamores. With the help of several volunteers, Claire taught the boys residing at the Sycamores facility about the food and customs related to the Chinese New Year. The boys also had fun making lanterns and dragon masks and eating lots of traditional Chinese New Year goodies.  Each boy left with a party bag filled with Chinese New Year party favors!

Claire is a senior at Flintridge Preparatory School and has been a Girl Scout for 11 years.  She has been a member of the Varsity Water Polo, Varsity Swimming, and Junior Varsity Cross Country Teams for all four years of high school, as well as Vice President of the Spanish Club for the last three years. She enjoys participating in school dance concerts, and is both excited and nervous about her graduation from high school.

Post-graduation, Claire is undecided about what she wants to do in college, but she has preliminary interests in the medical field and art history. Outside of school and Girl Scouts, Claire enjoys traveling and learning, and especially hopes to someday visit Africa and Southeast Asia. She also hopes to learn many languages, including Swahili, Chinese and Italian.

Claire would like to thank everyone who helped her get this far, but especially her troop leader, Janet for pushing her to pursue the Gold Award.

Kristin

For her Gold Award project, Kristin gave a makeover to a classroom at the Roger Barkley Community Center (RBCC) in La Cañada. She has been volunteering at the RBCC for five years. Her project involved cleaning, patching, and repainting the walls, sewing and hanging new curtains, and putting new hardware on the cabinets. While completing these initial tasks, she discovered water damage and other problems that needed to be dealt with as well.

 GoldAward.gif
She raised funds through extensive recycling and researched the most cost-effective way to execute her project. Enlisting the help of her family and friends, she found herself not only making an important improvement to the classroom, but having a great time while she was doing it.

In addition to volunteering with the Girl Scouts, Kristin helps the community with other organizations, namely the RBCC. She enjoys working with children, whether as a T-ball coach, an assistant in an art class, a camp counselor, or a babysitter. As a senior at La Cañada High School, she was honored with the distinction of National Merit Scholarship finalist and has received many merit scholarship offers from various colleges and universities. In her spare time, she has taken on a part-time job. Next year, she plans to further her education and hopes to pursue a career in writing.

First and foremost, Kristin would like to thank Megan Browne at the Roger Barkley Community Center, for her encouragement and enduring patience. More help and assistance at the RBCC came from Joe Streckermeier, the art teacher and primary user of the classroom. She’d also like to give special gratitude to her troop leader Susan Ratliff for her support and helpful insights. Mrs. Ratliff has been Troop 599’s dedicated leader for many years. Kristin also thanks her family and friends for instruction and donation, and especially thanks her mother Marion Darling and her friend Marie Collins for giving their time and talent to help out.

Erica

For her Gold Award project, Erica raised funds and collected items to donate to low-income families during the Christmas season through “Friends in Deed” in Pasadena.

Erica solicited companies and grocery stores for donations, receiving food, gift certificates and presents valued at over $1,000. She also visited the toy district in Los Angeles on two separate occasions and obtained approximately 450 toys.

 GoldAward.gif

With the help of the staff at Friends in Deed and other volunteers, Erica distributed food, toys and other donations to 200 families on December 21, 2006. Friends in Deed donated surplus food and presents to Union Station and the Pasadena Civil Services.

Through this project, Erica learned that things do not always go as planned. She learned to appreciate what she has, to be happy with her life, and to take advantage of all the opportunities she has been given.

Erica is currently a senior at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. She is involved in her school’s senior dance company, Saltatrix, and is a member of various clubs at school such as Students Against Drunk Driving, California Scholarship Federation, and National Honor Society.

She has volunteered over 100 hours at Camp Max Straus, a local camp for inner city kids, located in La Crescenta. She enjoys working at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center teaching children how to swim. Throughout high school, she has been on the Varsity Water Polo and Swim Teams.

Erica would like to thank her mom and co-leader Mary Davis, and her other co-leader Janet Braun, for motivating her to complete her project. She would also like to thank Calando, Arrowhead, Insert, and all other supporters for their generous contributions. She would especially like to thank Charlene Albee for overseeing her project and helping her achieve her Gold Award.

Christina
Christina’s Gold Award project was entitled “A Helping Hand for Mothers-To-Be.”  The project benefited the East Los Angeles Pregnancy Center, a newly opened pregnancy help organization for women.  Christina held a car wash to raise money to buy items for the Center.  With the help of five hard-working volunteers, she was able to raise enough money to purchase many diaper bags, diapers, baby wipes, baby clothing, baby lotion, baby shampoo, wash cloths, etc.  These items are now available to low-income mothers at the Center who would not otherwise be able to afford them.

 GoldAward.gif

Christina is currently the Vice President of the California Scholarship Federation at Immaculate Heart High School, where she is a junior. She has received the Scholar-Athlete Award every year since freshman year, which is awarded to students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.  As a member of the Varsity Basketball Team, Christina was named MVP.  She is also a member of the Spanish National Honor Society and was Winter Formal Princess her freshman year.  Christina was also selected to be one of six leaders for her upcoming senior Kairos retreat.

An active Girl Scout, Christina has received the I Live My Faith Award, the Marian Award, Bronze Award, Silver Award, and now the Gold Award.

Christina plans to major in psychology and sociology in college.  She hopes to one day be a social worker and work with juvenile delinquents.  She also would like to work in the Peace Corps in either South America or Africa.  After she retires from social work, she wants to travel and see the world.

Christina would like to thank her parents for always supporting her in her endeavors, both inside and outside of Girl Scouting.  She would also like to thank her devoted and dedicated leader, Mrs. Patti Brugman, for her ten years of caring support.

Robyn

Robyn decided to complete her Gold Award project at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles where she has been volunteering for the past two years.

For her project, and in conjunction with the museum’s monthly “Family Fun Days,” which focus on unique themes, Robyn developed a curriculum to teach children about insects.

 GoldAward.gif

Robyn created a dichotomous key to teach children how to differentiate between insects and how to classify them. With magnifying glasses and insect specimens, Robyn spent a weekend teaching museum guests the different parts of the insects, insect behaviors and adaptations of local insects.

Robyn is a senior at Flintridge Preparatory School where she has been an active participant in many school plays and musicals. When she is not participating in Girl Scouts, she enjoys volunteering at the Natural History Museum, painting, sketching, playing the piano and dancing.

Robyn would like to thank everyone who helped her achieve her Gold Award, including Robin Savoian, Julie McAdam, Brent Karner, Joe Maggio, the Gallery Interpreters, and especially, James Clark.

Kathleen
For her Gold Award project, Kathleen organized an “Exploring World Religions” exhibit at a weekly Harvest Market in her community. The objective of the project was to promote religious tolerance through a better understanding of major world religions.

Kathleen researched information about Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Atheism, and many of the different denominations of Christianity.

 GoldAward.gif

She used nine 6-foot tall pieces of cardboard and displayed the information—history, basic beliefs, religious text, traditions—along with pictures and symbols. She brought the exhibit to the Harvest Market so that many people from various backgrounds would see it and get a brief overview of major world religions, enhancing their understanding of them and the people who practice them.

Kathleen believes that the greater the community’s understanding of various religions practiced, the more tolerant they will be of the differences.

In addition to Girl Scouts, Kathleen is a member of the Nichiren Buddhist organization, Soka Gakkai International, where she has held various youth leadership positions. She also writes for the Brandeis University newspaper, The Hoot, and interned for the Crescenta Valley Sun.

She received the Justice Brandeis full-tuition scholarship at Brandeis University and the Los Angeles Times Student Journalism Scholarship. In addition to various local community awards, Kathleen also received the Crescenta Valley High School English award.

Kathleen loves studying Buddhism, literature, feminism and radical politics. She hopes to major in Sociology and Women’s Studies, pursue a career in journalism, and one day change the world.

Kathleen would like to thank her mother, Kathy Quant, for being an amazing and wonderfully unconventional Girl Scout leader over the past eight years. From organizing Women’s Career Symposiums to teaching the girls how to change the oil in a car, Kathy helped the girls in Troop 213 become strong and independent women. Kathleen knows she could not have achieved all that she has without her mother’s guidance and support.

Brittany
Brittany renovated the offices of the Pasadena Department of Children and Family Services for her Gold Award project. The DCFS supports foster children and their families and holds visits there in hopes of reuniting them.

Understanding the stress children and adults are often under while waiting there, Brittany created “A Cheerful Wait” to turn the white, drab waiting room into a child-friendly, cheerful area. She started by collecting books and toys for the children. Using the money she earned from several fundraisers, she purchased redecorating supplies and painted each wall of the interview offices in a different bright color.

 F_Brittany.gif

She then designed and painted a three-wall mural depicting children playing at a park with a rainbow overhead and greetings in different languages. When the room was ready, Brittany washed the existing toys and replaced damaged ones with new ones. She stocked the freshly painted bookcase with the donated books and purchased storage cases to keep toys better organized. Children can now take home their favorite book or toy. This past September, DCFS held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the new waiting area.

In addition to Girl Scouts, Brittany is active in many organizations and enjoys a number of hobbies. She is currently an Associated Student Body Activities Co-Director, and was previously a Junior Representative and Sophomore Class Vice-President in student government at La Canada High School.  She is also a member of Advanced Drama, Film Club, and Spanish Club.  At her church, Brittany has served in several youth leadership positions and attends early-morning seminary. Her hobbies include photography, traveling, art, piano and design.

Brittany would like to thank her mom and dad, her troop leader, Anne Tryba, her my project advisor, Lynn Gillins, Virginia Culbertson, and the rest of the staff at DCFS, and all the friends and family who supported her.

Nicole
Nicole’s Gold Award project, “Giving Warmth and Comfort to the Elderly,” was inspired by a visit to her grandmother in a nursing home. Noting that the residents did not have lap blankets for chilly days, she accepted the challenge of making a lap blanket for each of the 108 residents at Emmanuel Health Care & Rehabilitation Center in West Covina.

Nicole presented the blankets at a Valentine’s Day party for the residents, whose excitement and gratitude, along with the tears her grandmother shed, really made her project complete.

 GoldAward.gif

Nicole has been in Girl Scouts for 11 years, earning the Bronze, Silver, and now the Gold Award. She has had many exciting experiences including visiting Savannah, Georgia, the birthplace of Girl Scouts’ founder, and participating in the 22nd Annual Bridging Ceremony in San Francisco. Nicole was also honored to belong to the “Our Cabaña Troop,” which traveled to Mexico for two weeks.

Nicole is a sophomore at Nogales High School and is on the Junior Varsity Tennis Team. She is also involved with Venture Crew 443 in Covina and enjoys the excitement of being on a co-ed Crew. Currently, she is in training for a 55-mile trek this summer at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

Nicole would like to thank Ms. Asuncion Nogales of Emmanuel Health for all her help on the project. She would also like to thank her cousin, Christin Tobey, for helping with the challenge of negotiating the material she needed at the garment district and for getting it to fit in a Corolla.

Nicole would also like to thank the person that she has looked up to all these years -- her sister, Jodi Anne. Jodi was her advisor for the project and also her assistant leader. Lastly, Nicole would like to thank her parents Diane and Joe Franssen for their love, support and help throughout her scouting years and especially for being her leader.

Haley

For her Gold Award project, Haley created a donor recognition mural for the Glendale YWCA. The YWCA, which provides emergency shelter and programs for victims of domestic violence, requested a beautiful garden mural to acknowledge and thank the individuals and community groups who support their efforts.

In addition to designing the mural, Haley researched and utilized a new product, a magnetic primer, which enables the YWCA to use magnetic nameplates on the mural to recognize the donors.

 GoldAward.gif

The expense of this new product made it prohibitive with her small budget, so Haley contacted the company and persuaded them to donate a gallon of primer. Over the past summer, Haley and several friends completed the mural. She was honored to be able to work with the YWCA and was impressed with their efforts on behalf of victims of domestic violence.

Haley, a senior at La Cañada High School, plans to attend a four-year college in the fall, majoring in illustration. The recipient of several art awards, she has participated in the Pasadena Chalk Festival for the past four years and has enjoyed decorating LCTRA Parade floats.

A Girl Scout since kindergarten, she also belongs to the Art and Culture Clubs. Haley is an AP Scholar and member of The National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation. She has been recognized in Who’s Who Among American High School Students. Haley is looking forward to traveling through Europe this summer.

Haley would like to thank her Girl Scout leaders, present and past - Donna Jaeger, Dianne Tso, Alice Ryan, and Wendy Jensen; Dr. Kathy Mathis and Richard Burrell of the Glendale YWCA; Magnamagic, for the generous donation of the magnetic primer; Katie Caswell for donating paint used for her own Gold Award project; Art teacher Mike Kauffman; friends who helped with the execution of the mural; and her supportive family.

Jacquelyn

For her Gold Award project, Jaquelyn donated emergency supplies to the students at Santa Teresita School, which is comprised of children from lower-income families.

The school was in dire need of emergency supply kits for each of the classrooms. This was an expense it could not afford, but a necessity for the students’ safety. First, Jaquelyn organized a collection drive for emergency supplies, setting up three collection boxes where people could drop off donations.

 GoldAward.gif

She gained public awareness through press releases in newspapers, announcements in church bulletins and at masses, and letters to local Girl Scout troops.

In addition, she organized a presentation by the American Red Cross to educate the students at Santa Teresita on emergency preparedness. She also distributed educational materials for them to take home to their families.

Jacquelyn collected hundreds of emergency and first aid supplies, which she put into well-organized kits that included informational materials. As a result of her project, over 230 students and faculty will now have the necessary emergency supplies for their physical needs, as well as the information they need to appropriately respond in an emergency situation.

Through her project, she learned the importance of organization and planning. In addition, she discovered that she is a confident public speaker and a competent writer.

Jacquelyn is a senior at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy where she is a member of the Senior Dance Company, a school Ambassador, and a Senior Class Officer. In addition, she is a member of the National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honors, National Society of High School Scholars, and National Charity League.

Her project would not have been possible without the caring and generous support of her troop leader, Mrs. Karen Parks. She would also like to thank Cathy Sproule from the American Red Cross for all her generous time and assistance in making her project such a success.

Emily

Emily’s Gold Award project was titled “Project Fun Pack.” She put together 300 craft packs and donated them to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Her goal was to provide a fun activity for children in hospital rooms who did not feel well enough to go to the play room. In order to complete this project, she raised $300 for the crafts as well as purchasing, organizing, and making examples of each kind of craft.

 GoldAward.gif

Emily delivered “Project Fun Pack” in August of 2006. The hospital was overjoyed to receive the packets and expressed their thanks for the positive impact the project has had on the patients of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Emily is a member and Treasurer of the California Scholarship Federation at her high school. In addition, she volunteers at her church as an active member of the drama team.

Emily has won several art awards. Last year she was privileged to win a Regional Gold Award in the Scholastic Art Awards Competition drawing category as well as a National Silver Award, which she received at New York’s Carnegie Hall. She entered the Competition again this year and won another Regional Gold Award in the painting category, which is now in the running for a National Award.

Her goal is to become a fashion/costume designer in addition to becoming a fine artist.  She is currently working toward that goal as a junior in the Visual Arts Program at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts where fashion design is one of her many intensive art studies.

Emily also works part-time at a fashion boutique in Sierra Madre, where she has gained further knowledge of the fashion industry. Some of Emily’s other interests are travel and music.

Kristin

Kristin provided the 66 children at Hillsides Home in Pasadena, a residential home for abused children, a merrier Christmas for her Gold Award project.

Kristin set up a Christmas giving tree at her school and collected Christmas gifts for the children at Hillsides from their wish lists. Through donations from Leo Club at Flintridge Prep and others, Kristin assembled stockings/gift bags for each child at Hillsides.

 GoldAward.gif

On December 23, 2006, Kristin hosted a Christmas party at Hillsides for all of the kids, with the help of several volunteers. In addition to receiving their stockings/gift bags and Christmas gifts, the children at Hillsides decorated 28 dozen Christmas cookies, made ornaments and key chains, watched “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” devoured Christmas goodies, and enjoyed the holiday festivities.

Kristin is a senior at Flintridge Preparatory School in La Cañada. She serves as the Senior Class President and has been active in student government throughout her four years in high school. She has played varsity soccer at Prep for 4 years, having recently served as Co-Captain and earning 1st team All Prep league honors.

Kristin has also been a member of the Debate Team at Prep, and was the Southern California Debate League Champion (Public Forum) in 2005 and Runner-up in 2006.  Kristin is a National Merit Finalist and a member of Cum Laude society. She is interested in studying history, government and/or politics in college.

Kristin would like to thank Laura Kelso at Hillsides for all of her help with this project; Reggie Ursetti and Susan Hodge, librarians at Prep; Leo Club; and all of the volunteers who helped make this project possible.

She would also like to thank her mom and co-leader, Janet Braun, and co-leader Mary Davis for all of the incredible adventures in Girl Scouts and their help with her Gold Award project.

Laura
For her Gold Award project, Laura organized volunteers to make baby quilts for donation to the prayer ministry at First United Methodist Church in Pasadena, the church Laura attends.

Laura obtained donations of all supplies needed to make the quilts and organized groups of volunteers to help cut and piece together quilt squares and assemble and sew the quilts.

Laura is a senior at South Pasadena High School. She is the president of Empath Club, which provides service to and visits retirement homes.

 H_Laura.gif

She hopes to attend college in Northern California or Oregon. Laura is interested in a career that involves helping others in some way and dreams of traveling to countries such as Peru, Costa Rica and Ireland.

Laura has earned several ribbons at the Los Angeles County Fair for her quilting as well as ribbons at both the California State Fair and Los Angeles County Fair for her school woodshop projects.

Laura is active with the youth choir, bell choir and youth group at her church. She has traveled with her youth group to Mexico to renovate a church and to build and repair stucco houses.

Laura feels fortunate to have been selected to participate in the Rose Parade as a member of the 2007 Tournament Troop with other Girl Scout Gold and Boy Scout Eagle Award recipients. Having watched the Rose Parade throughout her life, she felt this was an opportunity of a lifetime.

Laura has been a Girl Scout since first grade and has had many memorable adventures, including a sleepover at Sea World and a trip to Our Cabaña in Mexico, where she met Girl Scouts from different countries and climbed the ancient pyramids.

Laura would like to thank her mom who helped motivate her to finish her Gold Award project and her leaders for all the great opportunities they provided her.

Karen
Karen’s Gold Award project was designed to broaden children’s imaginations and to encourage them to work together as a group. She helped a group of children work together to create one set of alphabet books.

The project helped them review vocabulary skills while fostering their creativity. In addition to the book making, the children created a handprint
collage as a memento of their bookmaking project.

Karen wanted this project to give children the experience of working together as a group to create something that benefits the entire community. The completed alphabet books were donated to the Mothers’ Club Community Center in Pasadena.

 H_Karen.gif

Karen is currently attending The University of California, Irvine. She is a Public Relations Officer for the Golden Key International Honor Society and a member of the Communication Club.

She plans to major in Psychology and Social Behavior and to minor in Management and/or Film and Media.

During her high school years, Karen was the Chinese Club Vice President, an Assistant Girl Scout Troop Leader and an active member in Interact Community Service Club. Not only did Karen actively participate in many clubs at school, she was also on the Gabrielino Varsity Swim Team for four consecutive years.

Karen received the Girl Scout Silver Award in 2002 and completed her Gold Award last summer. Karen says that without the help of her mother, Aunty Connie, Deanne Aranda, Stephanie Verdugo, Terese Miller and all the helpful children from BRITE (Bridging Resources in Technology and Education), her project would not have been a success.  She wishes to thank them all for their time and assistance.
