:: 2007 Gold Award Girl Scouts
Each week, Girl Scouts - Mt. Wilson Vista Council will highlight three
of the 85 Gold Award recipients for the year 2007.
This week we congratulate and honor Gold Award
Girl Scouts Ashley and Courtney of La Cañada and Christin of Glendora.
Girl Scouting’s highest honor, the Gold Award, recognizes Senior Girl Scouts for outstanding accomplishments in leadership, community service, career
planning, and personal development.
The award culminates with a Gold Award project that has a positive
and lasting impact on the community. Each project represents a minimum of 65 hours of planning and implementation. This year’s
group of Gold Award recipients contributed over 5,500 hours of service to the community.

Ashley Ashley’s
Gold Award project involved educating the public about the benefits of pet ownership and helping senior citizens find feline
companions from Southern California Siamese Rescue and the Paw’d Squad, a non profit rescue organization.
She
spoke about the benefits of pet ownership at Girl Scout troop meetings as well as at various fairs at the Pasadena Senior
Center.
Ashley is currently a senior at La Cañada High School and will attend a four-year university in
the fall of 2007. She is a five-year member of the choral department, and currently sings with the nationally recognized La
Cañada High School Chamber Singers, who recently sang at the American Choral Directors’ Association in Miami.

Ashley is also a member of the National Honor Society, the California Scholarship Federation,
is an editor of the school’s Literary and Arts Magazine, and is currently participating in her fourth year in the all-school
musical, this year as a dancer. She volunteers weekly at the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena and enjoys reading and playing
the piano in her free time.
Ashley would like to thank Julie Shaull for being a wonderful
leader and role model and for her unwavering support throughout the entire process. She would also like to thank her family
for their love and support.

Courtney
Courtney’s Gold
Award project was titled “Ti Haiti,” meaning “Little Haiti” in Creole. Through her “Ti Haiti”
project, Courtney arranged for baby food and other supplies to be sent to the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Deschapelles,
Haiti.
Twelve large containers of urgently needed supplies
were collected and sent to the hospital by private airplane last summer. As a result, 285,000 rural Haitian families benefited
from baby food, diapers, clothing, bedding, medical supplies and room fans. | |
Courtney is a senior at
La Cañda High School and is a member of the National Honor Society and the California Scholarship Federation. She is
also a member of Chamber Singers and recently performed for the National American Choral Directors Association in Miami, Florida.
Her other school activities include cross-country, track and field, dance teams, volleyball and cheerleading.
Courtney is active in weekly service and social youth activities at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints and received the Young Womanhood Recognition Award. She marched in the 2007 Tournament of Roses Parade as a member
of the elite Tournament Troop. Courtney is looking forward to attending Brigham Young University in the fall and hopes to
one day raise a family.
Courtney is grateful to her family for their guidance, love and support
during this substantial project. She would also like to recognize the tremendous generosity and support of the La Cañada
community which donated many hand-sewn quilts and baby blankets.
In addition, Courtney would
like to send a big thank you to the many Girl Scout leaders who have guided her over the years: Donna Jaeger, Dianne Tso,
Marie Abajian, Sheila Paccone, Linda Anderson, and Christie Frandsen. She would also like to send her love and appreciation
to Dr. Henri Ford and his family for their friendship and mentorship through her successful “Ti Haiti” Gold Award
project. |
Christin
Christin’s Gold Award project was to renovate and revitalize the Glendora Friends Church nursery playground.
The project started with removing two diseased trees, grass, and rusty old play equipment. Next,
she built a retaining wall, added dirt to level the area, and covered it with six inches of playground wood chips to make
a soft play area. A wrought iron fence was built to enclose the area. To finish the project off, new play equipment was bought
and constructed. | |
Christin, a member of Girl Scout Troop
246, is also a member of the Boy Scout Venture Crew 443, and currently serves as Treasurer. She is also active in the youth
group at Glendora Friends Church where she works in the Nursery one Sunday a month. Among her many activities, Christin is
looking forward to a 10-day backpacking trip this summer at Philmont Scout Ranch. She loves to travel, camp, and shop, and
to redesign living spaces.
Christin’s dream is to become an Interior Designer, and
travel around the world. She plans to attend Cal Poly and then transfer to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising
in Los Angeles.
Christin wants to thank all who helped her to achieve her Gold Award. A special
thanks to Jann Wilson, who has been her leader since Christin was a Brownie. She also wishes to thank the congregation at
Glendora Friends Church and Pastor Bruce Butler for all their help and support. Thanks also to her cousins Jodi and Nicole
Franssen, for their help and encouragement. She is also grateful to Kenneth Crowley and Jon Chan, for their timesaving tips
on grass removal as well as their help in removing it. Jim O’Brien, Project Counselor, deserves a huge thanks for helping
every step of the way! And of course, Christin wants to thank her mom, dad, and brother Dustin for always being there for
her! |
