Troubleshooting E-mail Viewing Problems

If the following answers do not resolve the problem you are having, please contact the Marketing Department at (626) 445-7771, ext. 313 or
communications@gsmwvc.org.

Why am I receiving garbled e-mails?
Girl Scouts – Mt. Wilson Vista Council sends e-mails that conform to Internet standards, known as RFCs, for how mail is formatted, transmitted, and displayed. If garbled mail is received, it is a result of a contact's e-mail client.

E-mail clients that are likely to receive our e-mails poorly are Mac Mail, GroupWise, Eudora, Lotus Notes, OE/Macintosh, and Outlook '97.  These email clients do not strictly follow these RFC standards, either by design or due to bugs they later address in their own software.

If your e-mails are received garbled, you may choose to access our e-mails from a web client like Hotmail or Yahoo! instead.

Why can’t I see images in the e-mail?
Here are the possible reasons why you may not able to see images in your e-mail:

1. You are using an e-mail client, such as Outlook 2003, that includes an option to block images.

2. Your ISP or corporate mail server is blocking the images from being displayed.

3. You requested a text-only version and only see the text without the formatting, colors, and images.

4. You are using an e-mail client that generally has issues with displaying HTML e-mail and images, e.g. Mac Mail, GroupWise, Eudora, Lotus Notes, OE/Macintosh or Outlook '97.  You may get formatting that looks strange or you may get text e-mail with links where the images should have appeared.

I have a Hotmail account and cannot see images or click on links in the e-mail. Why is that?
Hotmail has come out with a beta version of its email client called Windows Live Mail.  Now, as with AOL, Windows Live Mail has a security feature that automatically turns off the ability to view images, download attachments, and click links in any emails coming from unknown senders.

This means that if you are not in your contact's address book, your email could initially look like the one below. In order to view the email completely, simply instruct the contact to click the "Show content" link at the top of the email.

My email images are not displaying in Outlook. Why?
Microsoft updated its latest security settings and you may have this issue if you recently:

• upgraded to, installed a patch for, or use Outlook Express 6 or
• installed Windows XP, or XP Service Pack 1.

There are a couple of ways to resolve this issue.  Choose a method below.

Method 1:
1. Open Outlook Express 6.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Security tab.
3. Click to clear the "Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail" check box.
4. Click OK.

Method 2:
1. Open Outlook Express 6.
2. Click Tools > Options and click the Send tab.
3. Go to the "Mail Sending Format" header, and make sure that HTML is highlighted as your mail-sending format.
4. Click the HTML Settings button, and make sure that "SEND PICTURE WITH MAIL" has a checkmark.

Method 3: Outlook Express 6 with Internet Explorer v6.0.2600
1. Go to Tools > Internet Options and click the Advancedtab.
Scroll down to the "Multimedia" section place a check in the box for "Show Pictures."
