Robotics Teams Continue to Celebrate Teamwork and Success in Competitions
It's been an exciting year for the GSMWVC Robotics
teams whose hard work and perseverance has resulted in more than a few awards at a number of tournaments locally and
regionally.
Most recently, Le'Go My Legos, Team ROBO and E-RUSH competed in the FIRST LEGO League Championship
Tournament on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at Manhattan Beach Middle School. Demonstrating incredible skill, determination
and teamwork, the girls inspired everyone around them...and not to mention had a lot of fun. | |
Troop ROBO earned the Second Place Champions Award and second
place in Performance, while Le'Go My Legos (aka Apostrophe Girls) garnered the Team Spirit Award. The girls ended each
performance round with a friendly cheer for their competing team. Visit www.youtube.com and type in "Apostrophe Girls" to watch a special video the girls posted!
The
teams also met up with another Girl Scout robotics team from Joshua Tree Council, SAVvy. The fellow Girl Scout team garnered
the Teamwork Award. The team was comprised of girls from several troops and created as a part of a Silver Award Project.
Upcoming Competition The high school team, Rock 'n Roll Robots, will
head to Las Vegas this month to compete for a trip to the national championships. They will be competing at Palo
Verde High School on February 23, 2008. Opening ceremonies are at 9:00 a.m., and the public is welcome to attend and cheer
the team to victory!
Back in December, GSMWVC's nine Junior Girl Scout Robotics Teams traveled to La Puente
where they had a thing or two to celebrate at the end of the day-long FIRST LEGO League Qualifying Tournament.
The teams garnered several awards that recognized work in programming, presentation and robot design,
among other criteria.

In its first
year, Mt. Wilson Vista Council fielded 11 robotics teams as part of its Robots! Robots! Robots! program. Among the
many exciting components of this new program, the girls work together to build a robot, program it to complete tasks, research
a science-related topic and present before a professional panel, and compete in competitions with other youth. The program
also enables girls to grow and reach their full potential. Through the program, girls develop leadership, gain an understanding
of teamwork, learn how to set and achieve goals, take on new and challenging tasks, demonstrate the importance of character
and conduct, and develop friendships.
For the ninth consecutive year, GSUSA has providing direct funding from the
Lockheed Martin STEM Career Exploration Grant to local Girl Scout offices. Our council is one of only 10 in the nation selected
to receive funding this year to implement an innovative pilot program in Los Angeles County.
The Council also received
a grant from the Motorola Foundation. The nine Junior Girl Scout teams, which include Girl Scouts from throughout the San
Gabriel Valley, are funded by the Motorola Grant.
Girl Scouts of the USA has a 95-year tradition of encouraging
girls to explore and enjoy science, technology, engineering and math (the STEM fields), areas that girls tend to steer away
from due to academic stereotypes and social environments. Today, Girl Scouts offers 75 badges in the STEM subjects and
locally Mt. Wilson Vista Council partners with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA and the Night Sky Network of Astronomers,
among others, on a variety of programs.
Mt. Wilson Vista Council is especially grateful to the support of the team
mentors and program partners from Caltech, JPL and the Society of Women Engineers, among others.
