:: Sources of Funding

As a non-profit organization, the council's primary sources of funding are the annual cookie program, the United Way, grants from foundations and corporations, special events, and donations from parents and caring individuals in the community.

Although the council charges modest fees for some of its events, these fees only cover a portion of the actual cost. Last year (fiscal 2005-2006), the council's actual per-girl cost for providing one year of Girl Scouting was $250.

Every year, the council must raise sufficient revenues to fund: program activities, training for adult volunteers, property development and maintenance, financial assistance for girls, camperships, support staff, council-sponsored events and activities, printed materials, supplies, equipment and resource materials.

How does Girl Scouts – Mt. Wilson Vista Council raise money to support these programs and services?
In order to provide quality programs for girls and the services required to sustain our volunteer adult leadership so that they, in turn, can support the diverse needs of the more than 9,000 girls we serve each year, Girl Scouts – Mt. Wilson Vista Council fundraises through:

:: Family Partnership Campaign
Girl Scout families know first hand the benefit of Girl Scouting to their daughters.  Our Family Partnership Campaign encourages families to financially support the council’s efforts to provide quality programs and enriching opportunities for girls, as well as the necessary Service Unit Manager and Leader training to ensure that adult volunteers have the skills and resources to make every girl’s experience with Girl Scouts a positive and memorable one.

:: Annual Fund
Each year the council reaches out to our community at large asking for their support.  Individuals, civic organizations, businesses, and corporations donate to Girl Scouts – Mt. Wilson Vista Council and help underwrite both the council and our Campership Fund which enables girls whose families have financial challenges the chance to attend camp.

:: Employee Contribution Programs
United Way, along with other corporate employee giving programs, allow employees to make donations to either a general fund that is allocated to various community programs, or to a designated non-profit agency such as Girl Scouts – Mt. Wilson Vista Council.

In addition, many corporations offer employee “matching gifts” to organizations when an employee makes a donation or volunteers time.

:: Vehicle Donations
When someone chooses to donate a car, boat, motorcycle or RV, the council has a non-profit partner specializing in these types of donations.  This partner will coordinate pick-up or drop-off of the vehicle, coordinate the vehicle auction, and provide the donor with the donor letter for tax purposes.  100% of the net proceeds from the vehicle sale are forwarded to GSMWVC.

Today’s Girls, Tomorrow’s Future Capital Campaign

In late 2003 Girl Scouts - Mt. Wilson Vista Council launched a $3.5 million Campaign to renovate three program centers, the Council Service Center and to provide enhanced troop camping programs for girls.

This first major campaign ever undertaken by the council will dramatically impact Girl Scouting in the San Gabriel Valley for years to come. To date, $2.4 million has been raised thanks to the generosity of many individuals, foundations, and corporations, allowing the council to complete renovations at its San Gabriel Program Center and at Camp Mariposa in Altadena.

:: "Ever Upward" Gala Event
This inaugural fundraising dinner and auction took place in February, 2006. The event was held at the Wind Tunnel, part of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Honorees included Bruce Corbin from the Union Bank of California Foundation, Academy Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin, and Mary Lou Steinmetz of the Steinmetz Foundation.

More than $65,000 was raised to help support the council’s ongoing programs for nearly 9,000 girls, including almost 2,000 girls from lower socioeconomic communities served through the Community-Based Program.

This year's Gala will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2007.
