:: Required Training for Property Use
Girl Scouts - Mt. Wilson Vista Council Policy states that:
"A troop participating
in an outdoor cookout or overnight campout must be accompanied by an adult who has successfully completed appropriate outdoor training within the past 3 years." (Pg. 15)
"When planning outdoor activities the age level and experience of
the girl participants should be considered. Camping skills should be taught in progression and activities planned appropriately." (Pg. 9)
Camping Skills-Level
I-Indoor Camping
Qualifies a troop to overnight at a Girl Scout Program Center or facilities such as
Lazy J Ranch or Angeles Crest Christian Camp.
Curriculum includes:
Outdoor Education; Progression in the Out-of-Doors;
The Eight Basic Camping Skills; Minimal Impact Camping; Countdown to Camping; Safety-Wise; Council Policies, Standards, procedures;
Activity Transportation; Emergency Procedures (including evacuation plans, use of fire extinguishers); Accident & Incident
Report; Troop First Aid Kit; Forms; Program Center Roster; Program Center Policies & Procedures; Hiking Trips; Clothing;
Insects; Poisonous Plants; Snakes; Kaper Charts and Camp Clock; Camp Program and Ceremonies (including games, Girl Scout’s
Own); Directions for Making a Sit Upon; Knots; Trail Signs; Telling Time; Nighttime Activities; Evaluation Your Camping Experience.
Camping
Skills-Level II-Outdoor Cooking
Cannot be taken without having taken Level I. Qualifies a troop to cook
in the out-of-doors AND to build and use a campfire.
Curriculum includes:
Introduction to Outdoor Cooking;
Progression in Outdoor Cooking; Menu Planning; Shopping and Equipment; A Guide for Food Quantities; Fire Safety Checklist;
Stoves and Lanterns for Camping; Charcoal Fires; Fire Starters; Building a Wood Fire; Campfire Program; Recipes for each type
of cooking as outlined in the Progression in Outdoor Cooking; Camp Sanitation; Directions for Making a Dunk Bag; Handwash
Set Up for Camping; Knots.
Camping Skills-Level III-Outdoor Camping
Cannot be
taken without having taken Level I and II. Qualifies a troop to tent camp.
Curriculum includes:
Readiness
Indicators; Personal Equipment List for Troop Camping; Selecting and Setting up the Site; Troop Equipment; Tents; Storm Lashing;
Animals & Birds; Finding Your Way; Outdoor Flag Ceremony; Knots; Lashing; Knife Safety.
NOTE: If you have previously
taken Camping Skills Training you may still take your troop camping and do outdoor cooking. If you’d like to take the
new training series, please do feel free to do so.
